Much Truth is Said In Jest

The old adage was very much in evidence last evening as President Obama poked fun — at himself, the media and the Republicans — at the annual White House Correspondents’ Dinner.

Footage the NFL Won’t Show You

postedPosted in The Sporting Life on November 8th, 2011 by glennm

Coachest Tape

It’s called “A22,” informally known as the “coaches tape” or simply game film, but the NFL guards it religiously. The rationale is somewhat surprising — that fans would be able to know more clearly how their team is screwing up compared to traditional sideline-angle TV shots.

That’s obviously absurd. The objective here is to keep understanding of the full intricacies of professional football formations and schemes to a handful of insiders. Yes, ESPN’s NFL Matchup gets a bit of coaches tape to show weekly, but that’s hardly the same as letting fans watch the game the way the teams, coaches and players do all the time.

The NFL has an online survey testing reactions to a possible new commercial product, one that would offer a combined game feed and coaches angles. Vote early and often!

Say It Ain’t So, Patrick!

Watching just a short bit of the wildly popular kids TV show “SpongeBob SquarePants” has been known to give many parents headaches. Now, psychologists have now found that a brief exposure to SpongeBob, Patrick, Squidward and the rest of the crew also appears to dampen preschoolers’ brain power.

The Media Genie

Apple was forced to kill its $0.99 rental offering for television programs. As Greg Sandoval of CNet observes, this is the media industry’s reaction to technological change — trying to put the MPEG genie back in the bottle. Good luck, Luddites.

The Hollywood studios and TV networks don’t want another Netflix. Look around. They’re trying to stuff that genie back into the bottle. The talk coming out of Hollywood is about raising prices for content and offering Netflix less content, not more. There is no consensus in Hollywood about anything, but a large number of decision makers want to see their shows and films offered online on a pay-per-view basis as they try to protect their margins.

The News Is Not, According To Ted Koppel

postedPosted in Boob Tube, Politically Incorrect on November 15th, 2010 by glennm

koppel

Yup, I agree with Ted. This is not news so much as advertiser-supported political dogma.

We live now in a cable news universe that celebrates the opinions of Olbermann, Rachel Maddow, Chris Matthews, Glenn Beck, Sean Hannity and Bill O’Reilly — individuals who hold up the twin pillars of political partisanship and who are encouraged to do so by their parent organizations because their brand of analysis and commentary is highly profitable.

Apparently, Keith Olberman says he will respond tonight. Should be interesting.

Is iPhone the next American Idol?

The daily audience for apps that run on Apple’s iOS operating system (for the iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad) has now surpassed 19 million users, who spend an average of 22 minutes per day using these apps, according to one measure. That means the audience for the iOS devices is now bigger than NBC’s Sunday Night Football and is just shy of the audience for ABC’s Dancing with the Stars.

Apple Hopes to Re-enter the Living Room

postedPosted in Boob Tube, Tech Bytes on July 2nd, 2010 by glennm

I love Apple TV and think the long-awaited integration of the Internet and television is about to go viral.

People familiar with the company’s plans also said that Apple executives are well aware that the battle for the living room is going to be arduous, and that the company must get it right the next time. In 2008, when Mr. Jobs re-launched the failed Apple TV at another Apple event, he said: “All of us have tried. We have, Microsoft, Amazon, TiVo, Netflix, Blockbuster. We’ve all tried to figure out how to get movies, over the internet onto a widescreen TV, and you know what, we’ve all missed. No one has succeeded yet.”

Hotter Than Tina

It was funny indeed, but does anyone really care? Did Palin’s SNL Stint Make Any Difference? [ABCNews.com] I actually thought Alec Baldwin stole the show with his line that Sarah Palin was “way hotter” in person that Tina Fey. About the nicest thing he could say!
