If you did not catch last night’s Men’s 4 x 100 freestyle relay at the Beijing Olympics, you need to see it. I am an old competitive swimmer (never as fast as those guys, of course!) and have watched every Olympics since 1964. With drama, speed and redemption — plus a fantastic comeback — this was a relay for the ages. Perhaps the best swimming race ever. And, oh yes, Michael Phelps won the gold, but it was his teammates who carried the day and restored this quintissential U.S. record and Olympic title to American hands. Update: NBC is already milking the scene to death, showing replays of the finish and Phelps’ enthusiastic cheering at least a dozen times between 9pm and midnight Monday evening. Sickening, really. Way to spoil a real moment, Costas & Co.!!
