“We’ve been in a crazy, experimental overload period with online social media for the last two or three years — but I think people are now beginning to figure out a more balanced role these tools play in their lives. A lot of people I know are reaching that inflection point with social tools.”
So says Clive Thompson, a technology columnist for Wired magazine, in a recent New York Times blog post. One Step Back From the Digital World. If by “more balanced” he means going off the grid for periods of relaxation, or to avoid (or cure) social networking addiction, I suspect Thompson is right. If he means withdrawing from social media, I doubt he’s at al close. These new means of communication have already changed patterns of behavior and relationships and are decidedly here to stay.
