The
Player's Football League was a pioneering fantasy football league — of
which I was the founder and Commissioner Emeritus — based
in Washington, D.C. The PFL had franchises throughout the United States,
including (at various times) Hawaii, San Francisco, Boston, Virginia,
New
York, Phoenix, Maryland and other locales. The league was founded in 1984,
and lasted for 12 exciting seasons. My teams
won PFL Superbowls IV and IX.
Unlike
today's Internet-based fantasy sports contests, the PFL was run the
old-fashioned
way, with in-person draft day parties and hard copy newsletters. We even
watched games together, rejoicing in the perverse pleasure of cheering
against favorite teams in order to build stats in "garbage time" during
the 4th quarter of otherwise meaningless NFL games. While the PFL succumbed
to work demands and other middle-age distractions, it lives
on in the hearts of PFL owners, who started a fantasy sports trend that
has experienced viral growth in the age of the Internet. (And actually, we've revived the league at NFL.com Fantasy for the 2008 season!)
