The New York Giants will open the 2008 NFL schedule with a Thursday, Sept. 4 game against the Washington Redskins. That’s entirely because the Giants startled the world last February by upsetting the undefeated Patriots to become Super Bowl champions [UPI.com]. It’s a home game — meaning my Redskins season tickets will be useless. And despite the New York Times’ suggestion that “[i]t is a league tradition to feature the Super Bowl champions in the first game of the regular season,” that’s only been the case for five years. Hardly a “tradition,” I would say.
